We say "passbook" in quotes because there is actually no passbook involved. Technically, it's known as a statement account. But "passbook" lets people understand immediately the type of account this is. It means a regular savings account with money that is liquid and completely accessible at any time. You can make deposits and withdrawals as you wish and without limits. There are no time commitments and large dollar amounts are not required in order to get a good yield on savings. A beginning rate is paid on accounts with average monthly balances under $1,000. At a $1,000 average monthly balance the rate jumps to the credit union's best regular savings rate.
